Novel Recommendation #2 (Benioff)

One of my favorite books this year was City of Thieves (2009) by David Benioff, recommended to me by my friend Mark Tschurr. It turned out to be an engaging and darkly humorous story set during the World War II siege of Leningrad.

A writer visits his retired grandparents in Florida to document their experience during the infamous siege of Leningrad. His grandmother won’t talk about it, but his grandfather reluctantly consents. The result is the captivating odyssey of two young men trying to survive against desperate odds. To read more of this review, visit here.

Other works by Benioff include: The 25thHour, a book he later adapted into the screenplay for the film by the same name, which starred Edward Norton and was directed by Spike Lee. Benioff also wrote a collection of short stories titled When the Nines Roll Over (And Other Stories) in 2004. For more about Benioff, visit here.

If you’ve read City of Thieves, let me know what you thought about it in the comments section below.

Thanks for reading,
